The Republic of India is located in South Asia. It is the seventh largest country in area and the second most populous country in the world. The climate varies from tropical in the south to temperate in the north. India supports more than 15 percent of the world’s people and has over 2,000 ethnic groups. Hindi is the national language and is spoken by 337 million people. English is used primarily in political and commercial communication. Approximately 80.5% of the population is Hindu, 13.4% Muslim, 2.3% Christian, 1.9% Sikh, and 1.9% other religions.

India has one of the world’s fastest growing economies. Despite the upswing in economic gains, the growth has been uneven among ethnic groups and geographic regions. Most instances of poverty exist in rural areas, where 71% of the population lives. More than 80% (or 700 million Indians) live on less than $2 a day, the average annual income is $820, and it is estimated that half of the world’s hungry live in India. There are 2.5 million people who are living with HIV/AIDS; the prevalence is much higher in Southern India.
